How do I tell from info online if a vcr/dvd is analog and will work with my cable in/out or…?

…digital? Bought 2 no good.
There must be a key word or two that makes it clear if a unit is old type analog or newer, but I don’t know what to look for. I am 70 and don’t want to learn any more new technology!

The VCR before the digital transition had what we call a NTSC tuner in it and would recieve through tuning over the air broadcast from ABC, CBS, NBC and such. Now that these broadcasters are sending digital signals instead of analog signals we have to use newer digital products. The new VCR’s come with ATSC tuners now so they can recieve these digital broadcasts when we scan for channels using arial reception (fancy word for rabbit ears). Regardless of having a digital or analog VCR, if you are screwing a basic cable line in the back of these products, it will not improve the picture quality of the cable service you are recieving. If you are looking to have a high quality cable picture come through the VCR/DVD unit you will probably have to contact your local cable service provider and request a High Definition service. This will mean that they will bring you a cable box that can convert the signal for you, if you are currently on digital cable service with a cable box, then that box will usually have to be upgraded for a newer box in order to recieve High Definition services. Either way it goes, your probably going to end up having to learn how to use something new. There are several electronic stores that offer troubleshooting and connection services and most of them will come out and take a look at what’s going on for free and offer an estimate of what you need to solve the problem. Usually if you purchase the hookup service of them fixing the situation by connecting new components or just rewiring things so they work properly they will also give a tutorial to demonstrate the use of the equipment to make it easy for you to use. I think the most common version of this service would be the Best Buy Geek Squad.
